Climate Change in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire

The UK’s climate is changing, and the impacts are already visible in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

“Further warming is inevitable, even on the most ambitious pathways for the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions. Only by preparing for the coming changes can the UK protect its people, its economy and its natural environment” says the UK’s Committee on Climate Change, the government’s expert advisor in its third Independent Assessment of UK Climate Risk Advice to Government (2021).

The risks and opportunities faced by each part of our society and economy are outlined in useful sector briefings, covering housing, health, biodiversity, agriculture, energy, business, transport and telecoms.

How Will Climate Change Affect Our Area?

An interactive tool by the BBC and Met Office provides insights into local climate projections:

  • Hotter, drier summers.

  • Warmer, wetter winters.

  • More frequent and intense extreme weather, including heavier rainstorms.

Are We Prepared?

A nationwide National Trust survey found 45% of UK citizens believe the country is not prepared for climate change, while only 4% think we are well prepared.

A Met Office report warns that if global average temperatures rise beyond 2°C, over one billion people worldwide will face extreme, life-threatening heat.
