Spring Bank Art Centre, New Mills, SK22 4BH

This is an invitation for the people of Derbyshire (and beyond) to come together, stretch our collective imagination, and explore the future we want to create for our community.

A writer, activist, and gifted facilitator of imagination, he has dedicated his life to showing that the future is not something we passively inherit but something we can actively create together.

Through books like The Transition Handbook and From What Is to What If, his podcast From What If to What Next, and countless talks and workshops, Rob has helped people fall back in love with possibility, reminding us that resilience, joy, and creativity are as essential to climate action as technology or policy.

Online Talk: Hydrogen’s Role in Our Energy Economy
Thursday 4th December
7.30-9pm
Online via Zoom

Join Hope Valley Climate Action for a talk and discussion by Michael Corcoran about all aspects of hydrogen usage.

How should hydrogen be sensibly used in our energy economy?

Hydrogen is often described as a clean fuel of the future, but its real value depends on where and how it’s produced, how it’s used, and what alternatives exist.

This talk will explore both the potential and the limitations of hydrogen in tackling climate change, from its vital role in hard-to-decarbonise applications to the risks of using it where simpler, cheaper solutions already exist.

They will range over five key sectors: industrial processes, road transport, aviation, heating of buildings, and balancing the electricity grid.

Drawing on the latest evidence from regional and national studies, the presentation will separate sound science from optimistic marketing and outline what a realistic hydrogen strategy might mean for the East Midlands and beyond.

Decarbonising Construction: Is Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) the only answer?

As the Government pushes for economic growth and ambitious housebuilding targets, demand for cement and concrete is set to rise. Cement is one of the world’s most carbon-intensive materials to produce, and the UK’s largest cement plant is located here in the Hope Valley.

That makes it more important than ever that we build responsibly - cutting emissions, using resources wisely, and staying within the limits of what the planet can sustain.

Breedon, the cement works operators, are investing in carbon capture and storage (CCS) to help reduce emissions, but not everyone agrees it’s the right or only path.

So what else can be done? From alternative materials and innovation to reducing demand, how do we move toward genuine decarbonisation and a fair transition that supports people, nature and the planet?

Join Hope Valley Climate Action (HVCA) for an evening of expert insight and discussion with:

· Michael Lord, Senior Analyst (Industrial Decarbonisation), Climate Change Committee

· Madeline Rihner, PhD Researcher, University of Sheffield and creator of Green Kid Comics.

Together, we'll explore what a sustainable future for construction could look like – here in the Hope Valley and beyond. No booking needed – just come along.

Belper's Extraordinary Waterpower Story Heritage Walk
Sunday 21st September, 11am, Bandstand in Belper River Gardens, Matlock Road, Belper DE56 1BE.

Join experienced guide, Ian Jackson, for a walk around the waterways of the Belper Mill complex to hear about Belper's industrial mill owners and renewable energy generators who, for nearly 250 years, have continually improved the harnessing of the power of the Derwent. Their stewardship of the river is a story of conflict, compromise and collaboration.

Ian Jackson, formerly project lead on the Ambergate Community Hydro project, has recently completed a PhD looking at Hydropower in the Derbyshire Derwent catchment and the issues preventing the harnessing of renewable power on the Derwent and its tributaries, including many sites that were self-generating hydroelectric power 100 years ago.

A copy of the PhD can be downloaded from the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site website HERE
