Spending - When Less is More

Our possessions add convenience and joy, but overconsumption can feel overwhelming if that new thing turns out to be not so desirable, or needed, or affordable, after all. Knowing that every purchase has an environmental impact, from raw materials and energy used to make it, to the waste products from its production and disposal can add to our discomfort.

The Slow Shopping and Slow Fashion movements are growing, encouraging mindful spending. Sarah Lazarovic’s beautifully illustrated book, A Bunch of Pretty Things I Did Not Buy, subtitled ‘What one woman learned from one year without shopping, a book about consumerism and living with less’, explores how she embraced the benefits of resisting the urge to buy, and painted the objects she desired instead.

Want to know the carbon impact of everyday items? How Bad Are Bananas by Prof. Mike Berners-Lee from Lancaster University, reveals the impact of everything from phones and cars to trainers and jeans.

Help others make smarter, sustainable spending choices in their everyday life by sharing what you do and why.
